Silkalay: Weaving a Legacy of Elegance

In the confluence of two words, "Silk" and "Alay," the founders of Silkalay envisioned more than just a store; they envisioned a sanctuary where the essence of silk and its rich varieties could  thrive.  This  abode  was  meant  to  preserve  the  cherished  traditions  of  Assam  for generations to come.

The Birth of Authenticity:

Established in 1976, in the cultural capital of Assam, Jorhat, Silkalay marked the beginning of a  remarkable  journey  showcasing  authentic  Assamese  Silk  garments  and  dress  materials. Silkalay's journey began by sourcing exquisite materials from the skilled weavers of Sualkuchi, situated on the northern bank of the mighty Brahmaputra River. Known as the Manchester of  Assam,  Sualkuchi was a  hub of  cottage  industries  specializing in handloom work. Back then,  few  non-Assamese  businesses  ventured  into  Assam  silk,  but  Silkalay's  founders possessed the determination to carve a niche in this domain.

The Uphill Climb:

Silkalay's path was not without challenges. Lack of proper road transportation to Sualkuchi meant the founders had to undertake arduous boat and steamer journeys from Jorhat and later from Guwahati to meet the weavers. Despite these obstacles, they forged ahead with unwavering determination and commitment to their vision.

Fostering Innovation:

Silkalay's founders collaborated closely with Sualkuchi's weavers, suggesting new patterns and designs that would align with the evolving fashion tastes of consumers. This partnership laid the  foundation  for  innovation  in  Assamese  Silk, shaping  the  fashion  industry  of  Assam  for generations to come.

Branching Out:

In 1993, Silkalay expanded its reach by establishing a new branch in Pan Bazar, Guwahati. The response was overwhelming. Silkalay quickly became a household name in Assam. However, with   success   came   competition   as   the   handloom   industry   flourished,   leading   to   the emergence of numerous rivals. What set Silkalay apart was its unwavering commitment to maintaining quality and prioritizing customer satisfaction.

A Brand is Born:

Over the years, Silkalay evolved into a brand that resonated throughout the state. In 2008, the first mega showroom of authentic Assamese Silk on GS Road in Guwahati became a significant milestone.  It  attracted  not  only  locals  but  also  visitors  and  tourists  eager  to  embrace traditional Assamese attire and mementos.

Expanding Horizons:

Silkalay continued to grow, entering new markets in Dibrugarh in 2008 and then in Tezpur in 2024.

Global Outreach:

With  changing times,  Silkalay ventured  into  the digital  realm in  2015  with  the  launch  of a website, reaching customers worldwide. Today, Silkalay proudly serves customers across India and internationally, including the US, Japan, Australia, and Singapore.

A Legacy of Excellence:

Silkalay  has  expanded  its  horizons,  but  its  core  values  remain  unchanged.  It  continues  to uphold  a  reputation  for  exquisite  quality  and  craftsmanship,  serving  both  domestic  and international  customers.  The  journey  that  began  in  1976  is  still  ongoing,  with  Silkalay's commitment to delivering the best only growing stronger with time.

Silkalay is not just a store; it's a custodian of Assam's finest silk traditions, weaving a legacy of elegance that transcends borders and generations.
